Week One - check!
so that was that for the first week. i think i made a pretty good impression too. the Plant Manager told the GM some nice things about me,and when he took me to meet him, the GM immediately offered to look around his house and see if he could rustle me up a TV and some assorted furniture!
work is tough, but fun too. after so many years i get a chance to be a grease monkey again! in case i hadn't mentioned this before, a long time back, just after i finished high school, i took a year out and worked in a garage. i absolutely loved pottering about as a mechanic, and learned boundless amounts about cars, customer service, people skills, leadership and all that. when i went into college after that i felt like a much more mature person.
now i find myself in a similar situation. i'm fresh out of college, and know little about the machines on the production line. but i do know a bit about working as a team, and being humble and not a know-it-all. i work on the second shift with three mechanics, and i am really happy that they call me their supervisor of their own volition! in fact they come and check with me what's going on, if i have work to give them, or if i wanted to come on a job with them cos they had something to show me there. i won a whole bunch of friends on the spot when word got out that the clothes i had ordered for myself at the HR Dept were not the management uniforms but the mechanic workshirts!
of course, this week has been rosy and all that i said goes out the window as soon as the proverbial shit hits the fan.. hehe!! but all in all it's been a very nice opening week, and i am very relieved that it wasn't unpleasant or uncomfortable at all!
